What's Happening at ESU 4?

There will be quite a few opportunities for Professional Development for Special Education teachers in ESU 4 districts. While the many of the opportunities are in the Webinar format, we are planning a full day workshop on Monday, February 20th at the ESU 4 Learning Center in Auburn. We haven't been together as a group for a year or so... it will be good to re-connect and re-establish our networks. This Special Education Update will focus on the IEP, as well as hosting a positive and collaborative IEP meeting. There is more information about the Feb 20th workshop as well as other ESU 4 Sped offerings below this little article on this blog. Information may also be found on the "ESU 4 Special Education Workshops" link under the "Special Education" tab on the ESU 4 Homepage. And finally, to register for any or all of these opportunities, you must log on to the ESU 4 Registration website!

As in the past, ESU 4's SCIP grant will support the attendance of parents, administrators, teachers, para-educators and other professionals at the Annual Autism Conference. This year's conference will be held in Lincoln at the Cornhusker Hotel. The focus of the event will be on Early Childhood. Therefore, those involved with early childhood programs will get first priority in attending this conference. I expect that registration for this year's conference will close quickly! The dates are Thursday and Friday, April 12th and 13th. Watch for emails concerning registration for this conference.

Stay tuned for additional opportunities and updates! The "NeSA Season" will be soon upon us! Accommodations for students with disabilities will be hot topics. Mitzi, Suzanne and I hope to post a QuickTime video answering basic questions about accommodations on the NeSA for all students, as well as students with disabilities and ELL students, on the ESU 4 website. Stay up-to-date with NDE's advice and guidance by checking out resources on the NDE Special Education website... http://www.education.ne.gov/sped/nesa.html.

In the future, I'm hoping to post "Questions and Answers" on this blog; having this resource might be valuable! I don't know about you, but I'm always looking the same things up over and over again. My goal is to give you one spot to refer! Until then... I look forward to seeing you in my travels across the ESU, as well as on the internet! Have a terrific February...

Plans for August are shaping up! Please check back for more detailed information and possible changes will be made as the dates appear closer on our calendar...

Ø Tuesday, August 16^th, 2011 - Annual “Health Day” for the Level III staff. CPR training will be held in the morning at the Learning Center with Medication training rounding out the afternoon at ESU 4 Conference Room A. We will begin at 8:00 a.m. Lunch will be on your own. If any of the itinerant staff want to participate in health day training, specifically CPR, you are welcome to do so. Please let Katrina and Catrina know, so they can prepare accordingly.

SCHOOL PSYCH/AUDIOLOGY MEETING IS RE-SCHEDULED TO MONDAY, AUGUST 22ND @ 1:00 P.M.

Ø Wednesday, August 17^th, 2011 - All ESU 4 “Reunion” at NCECBVI, Nebraska City. Coffee, juice and carbohydrates will be available at 8:00; we will begin at 8:15 a.m. in the cafeteria with introductions and insurance. Our very own Mitzi Hoback and Suzanne Whisler will be answering the question, “Can I Do This?” We’ll be putting plans into action during this next school year. In the afternoon, Gregg will be introducing Google and all that entails to the entire ESU/NCECBVI staff. I will probably take the last hour or so at the end of the day to review some quick housekeeping items for the ESU 4 Special Ed staff.

Ø Thursday, August 18^th, 2011 – Work day; I want to meet with the Learning Center staff in the afternoon.

Ø Friday, August 19^th, 2011 – Work Day. All staff involved in providing services to children involved in Early Childhood (0-5) are invited (and strongly encouraged!) to attend the Early Childhood Cadre meeting at the ESU. The meeting begins at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude by 12:00 p.m. You should have received your invitation to register in the mail.

In the afternoon… I would like to meet with the speech staff. We will begin at 1:00 p.m. and should be done by 3:00 p.m.

Ø Monday, August 22, 2011 – First day of school with students for the Level III programs!

o Thursday, August 11^th OR Friday, August 12^th, 2011 – All returning staff need to participate in the CPI Refresher training! This is a contract day. The training is a one-day event; you may choose either the 11^th or the 12^th. You must go to the ESU 4 website to register for the day you intend to attend. If you aren’t registered by the 8^th of August, you will be getting a call!

Also on the 12^th… Sally and I will be hosting an orientation all new staff for ESU 4/NCECBVI. We plan to meet at the ESU 4 office. Heather and Wenona will be receiving more information as the 12^th gets closer. Plan to begin at 9:00 a.m. We will provide lunch.

End of the Year Assignments and Inventory... I would like to have all speech tests and psych tests returned to the ESU at the conclusion of the school year, for the purposes of inventory and preparing orders for the next school year. I realize that some of the speech tests will be needed throughout the summer; with your help, we will work quickly to get the inventory complete.

Time Management 101... In the interest of trying to support some of you who are still working on the resolution to be better organized in 2011, I found this article from the Harvard Business Review booklet by way of the "Marshall Memo" that is sent to ESUs every couple of weeks. CEO Peter Bregman recommends a 4 step-process each day...
1) Plan for the day (5 minutes)... before you even turn on the computer! Make your list; similar to decide which "frog" you're going to eat.
2) Calendar the day... take out your calendar and schedule your top priorities into specific time slots, putting the hardest and most important items earlier in the day. (Sound familiar, frog fans?)
3) Refocus for one minute every hour... set your phone, watch, computer to ring every hour. When it rings, stop what you're doing, take a deep breath, look at your list and ask if your last hour was productive. Then, look at your calendar and recommit yourself to how you're going to use the next hour.
4) Review (5 minutes)... At the end of the day, shut off your computer and look back on the day. What worked? Did you get distracted? What can you do better tomorrow?

INFORMATION & UPDATES FROM 3/10/11 STAFF MEETING...
IEP meetings, busy schedules and technology... Please don't hesitate to work with districts using technology as you schedule IEP meetings into your busy schedules. I'd like to be able to reduce the amount of travel; it's always my goal that once you get to a district/school, you stay there throughout the day as much as possible. Skype, iChat, and Distance Learning are all great ways to participate in meetings...

End of the Year Assignments and Inventory... I would like to have all speech tests and psych tests returned to the ESU at the conclusion of the school year, for the purposes of inventory and preparing orders for the next school year. I realize that some of the speech tests will be needed throughout the summer; with your help, we will work quickly to get the inventory complete.

What does it mean to be a leader at ESU 4? (Activity: Define "Leadership" in 10 words or less.)

Mitzi received her award at NRCSA in Kearney on Thursday, March 24, 2011.

Our Sympathies to Katrina Ligouri and her family on the death of her grandfather. His funeral was in Hardington on Saturday, March 26, 2011.

IEP meetings, busy schedules and technology... Please don't hesitate to work with districts using technology as you schedule IEP meetings into your busy schedules. I'd like to be able to reduce the amount of travel; it's always my goal that once you get to a district/school, you stay there throughout the day as much as possible. Skype, iChat, and Distance Learning are all great ways to participate in meetings...

End of the Year Assignments and Inventory... I would like to have all speech tests and psych tests returned to the ESU at the conclusion of the school year, for the purposes of inventory and preparing orders for the next school year. I realize that some of the speech tests will be needed throughout the summer; with your help, we will work quickly to get the inventory complete.

**Mileage Reimbursement.... As of January 1st, the IRS allowable rate for mileage reimbursement will change to $.51 per mile. Please note as you submit your December/January reimbursement; you will have two different mileage figures...

**Weather reminder... I can't believe that winter 'snuck up' on me! Generally, I post the weather reminders about making sure that you are aware of the weather, on the districts' contact lists, etc. However, this year, I missed the opportunity! So, better late than never... it's convenient when all the ESU 4 districts close at the same time, however, be aware that weather conditions are often different throughout our ESU. If you have any questions or concerns about weather and roads, please call ahead to your schools and learn about conditions. If you have any concerns about safety, make the safe choice. **Attendance sheets will be due Feb 1st...

**Observation (Evaluation) Schedules... I have been emailing with many of you to get the evaluation schedule set. If you have not responded to my initial email, the time to do it is NOW! As we prepare for the observations, staff must complete the worksheet titled "Interview Protocol for a Preconference." Remember that we are not actually meeting prior to the observation but I would like you to complete this worksheet prior to the observation. I would like to have the schedule nailed down by the end of this week... Observations will start next week. (Updated 1/24/11)

**Weather reminder... I can't believe that winter 'snuck up' on me! Generally, I post the weather reminders about making sure that you are aware of the weather, on the districts' contact lists, etc. However, this year, I missed the opportunity! So, better late than never... it's convenient when all the ESU 4 districts close at the same time, however, be aware that weather conditions are often different throughout our ESU. If you have any questions or concerns about weather and roads, please call ahead to your schools and learn about conditions. If you have any concerns about safety, make the safe choice. **LEAVE FORMS...We continue to have trouble with getting all the forms we need, when we need. When you are submitting a request to attend a meeting/workshop, please attach a copy of the workshop flyer with the leave request. That will allow us to make sure we've got you registered! I don't want to be repetitive here (but I will!), your leave requests really need to match your professional goals. If I don't have your goals, I can't okay leave requests!

**Schedules... I posted this comment last week and due to the lack of response (I only received 3 schedules from certified staff), I am asking again... I need everyone's weekly schedule ASAP, specifically those who are itinerant and can be found in different locations on different days. I am developing a schedule for everyone's formal professional evaluation. This year, I'd like to set up a schedule rather than the hit and miss efforts of the past. So... please share your schedule with me by the end of this week (January 14, 2011). Thank You! I will have a schedule ready to go by next week... Thanks to Ellen Cain, Denise Buethe and Christy Tanner for reading the memo and submitting your schedules! Note: Speech staff can scroll down on this website to see what information I have for you.
